A scheme was designed to convert an existing Redgra hockey surface into an multi purpose synthetic turf pitch using a sand dressed short pile carpet suitable for competitive hockey and recreational football. In addition, a planning application was submitted to Reading Borough Council on behalf of Highdown Academy to provide the facility with floodlighting to attract community use and generate revenue.

When considering the choice of surface, different products and systems were researched to assess their performance and functional requirements to allow the Academy to select the most appropriate product on the market.

It is important to note there is not a single product that meets the requirements of all sports, so hybrid carpets are often considered by sports clubs and schools. The choice of carpet and system will depend on the priority and aspirations of the users and revenue stream to pay for annual upkeep and long term replacement at the end of the carpet’s useful life.
