chapel street corridor, salford

A development strategy was prepared to repair the urban fabric and provide the Chapel Street corridor with a new identity. Three urban ‘quarters’ were proposed to provide each area with a separate identity.

To the east, a ‘University’ quarter was proposed to encourage government investment together with low cost affordable housing and retail outlets. At the centre, a ‘commercial core’ was proposed to build on the recently completed Inland Revenue HQ linked to Manchester by a new pedestrian bridge designed by Calatrava. Towards the west a residential core with restaurants and bars was proposed.

To supplement the development framework plan, approximately 30 design guides were produced for various sites along the corridor to provide a basis for developers and councillors to move the regeneration process forward.
