manchester city centre
EDAW was commissioned after their competition winning entry for the redevelopment of Manchester City Centre after a devastating bomb blast in 1994.
The resulting scheme proposed the creation of a new street linking a series of public spaces connecting St Ann’s Church in the south, to Manchester Cathedral in the north and beyond to the station. Each space was to have a distinct identity, which was to be reflected in the scale and architectural treatment around and within the spaces. A mixture of building uses were proposed including loft living to encourage city habitation Roads and services were to be rationalised to improve the pedestrian environment.
The entry won the competition, which has provided the framework for regeneration. A number of buildings and spaces of exceptional quality have since been completed, which have revitalised the city centre.
