mornhill hotel
Planning permission for a 120 bed hotel with leisure facilities on the outskirts of Winchester on the edge of East Hampshire AONB was granted in 1998. The site was sold to a developer who commissioned Creating Place to redesign the external areas and prepare a Visual Impact and Ecological Assessment of the site.
The proposals sought to integrate the hotel within the environmentally sensitive landscape by cutting the hotel into the hillside and creating a terraced car park fanning out from the approach to the entrance.
A cut and fill balance was achieved to avoid unnecessary removal of material with sustainable forms of drainage being employed. The surrounding landscape was designed using local indigenous planting and included the restoration of rare chalk grassland habitat.
