At St Johns Road, a former railway cottage’s long narrow back garden was designed to offer a series of multi functional spaces combining traditional cottage planting with contemporary design.

Inspired by the single point perspective created by railway lines, a wall and pond compartmentalises the long narrow garden into 3 spaces. A bespoke galvanised steel trellis encloses a formal lawn edged with railway sleepers and lavender borders, which was designed to support a hammock, washing line and marquee. Honeysuckle has been encouraged to grow up the trellis, which provides a scented screen.

A timber platform set flush creates a transition from the house to the garden. Aluminium double doors open out from the kitchen into the garden, which is illuminated at night to encourage evening use as well as a space to admire from the house.
