knowle village
An urban design framework and master plan were prepared for the change of use of Knowle Hospital, a former psychiatric hospital to the north of Fareham. The design sought to transform the existing buildings and spaces from an oppressive institution into a welcoming village, providing all the facilities required for contemporary living.
The framework set out the broad strategy for spatial planning, access and circulation, and defined character areas, which were supplemented with sketches and axonometrics to give an overall impression of the long term vision. The framework provided the Local Planning Authority with supplementary planning guidance to ensure development adopted a coherent approach.
In addition a new 1.5 km long road was required to access the village. To integrate the road within the countryside a new 1.2 hectare woodland belt, which received a grant from the Forestry Commission, was implemented.
