university of east london, stratford campus

Preliminary proposals to develop the central open space for the University of East London, Stratford campus were prepared to support a planning application for a new library and administration building.

The Campus comprised a range of buildings varying in style, material and condition, two of which were Grade II* listed. The existing space was split into two halves by a public thoroughfare lined by mature London Plane trees and a number of  timber sleeper retaining walls. A number of trees around the space were protected by TPOs, which further constrained the proposals.

The landscape strategy sought to unify the existing spaces throughout the campus with a simple oval form around which pedestrians could flow freely. A central lawn supplemented with paving, seating and lighting sought to provide a dynamic space at the centre of the campus, which was designed to cater for a variety of uses and needs for students and staff.
