fernhill memorial garden

The concept for the memorial garden dedicated to Jo Wakefield is inspired by the physicist and mathematician, Sir Isaac Newton, whose interests included astronomy.

The garden is made up of a series of ‘Perfect’ numbers.

As an apple falls from one of six trees it breaks into 28 perfect sections spreading out within a framework of 496 sensory plants which enclose a seating area constructed of 8128 cobbles.

The garden is to be situated on a prominent corner of the school and is to remain open to encourage use. The garden is to be used as a place to meet, an area for quiet contemplation, or a space to pass through en route to class.

A poem, written by the students or close friends and approved by her next of kin is to be dedicated to Jo and engraved into the seat.
